COBOURG NAMES HODGINS HEAD COACH

Already known in Canadian Junior Hockey circles as an elite hockey coach with great leadership behind the bench, the Cobourg Cougars of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) have added another key piece to their team that will help them continue in their quest to become one of the premier junior 'A' hockey teams in the country.

The Cougars are very proud to announce that Curtis Hodgins (photo credit - Tim Bates/OJHL Images) of Courtice has been hired as its new Head Coach, effective immediately. Curtis will work closely with all members of the Cougars' management team.

Curtis has completed 12 years as a Head Coach in the OJHL, most of them spent with the Bowmanville Eagles, which were merged into the Cougars back in 2010. During his career, Curtis has piloted his teams to four OJHL Eastern Championships and most recently led the Whitby Fury to the OJHL Championship Series, where they lost in a very close finish to the Stouffville Spirit. Hodgins' is a four-time Eastern Conference Coach of the Year, most recently in 2009-10 with Bowmanville.

Curtis has also been part of the prestigious Team Canada East program for the past two seasons, in 2010 as an assistant to Head Coach Todd Gill and this past season as Head Coach. On both occasions, Team Canada East brought home the silver medal. As well, Hodgins has prior OHL coaching experience as an assistant coach with the Oshawa Generals from 1998-2000.

Cougars' Director Of Hockey Operations Perry Bowles was thrilled that Curtis was available and that he was able to bring Curtis on board. With Curtis being brought into Cobourg, he will help take the Cougars to even higher levels of achievement. "Cobourg’s management group has worked very hard to regenerate the Cobourg Cougars' franchise into one of the premier junior 'A' organizations in Canada and I look forward to working with Curtis, in our continuing quest to become better," Bowles said.

Curtis echoed Bowles’ sentiments as well when he said, “I am excited to become a member of the Cougars Den."

It is indeed an honour and a privilege to work within a dynamic organization like the Cobourg Cougars - a team embedded in a great hockey community with incredibly strong support from its community, sponsors and fans," said Hodgins. "I agreed to join the Cougars when it became clear we shared so many of the same core philosophies about hockey, while also giving young hockey players every opportunity to become well-rounded, respectful and good people confident in their abilities."

Curtis will work closely with all members of the Cougars' management team in its continuing efforts to become a leader in Canadian junior hockey. One of the team’s co-owners, Scott Mackie, sees Curtis’ hiring as a great development for the club.

"Needless-to-say, it is a testament to the strength, discipline and vision of the entire club that we are able to attract someone with so much to offer our club, like Curtis," said Mackie. "We are an organization geared for excellence. Curtis understands what it takes to be successful. He will assist the club in various ways, with an emphasis on helping us to recruit and develop players interested in progressing to higher levels within hockey and forging relationships with other levels within junior hockey."

BOWLES JOINS COUGARS FRONT OFFICE

Following a two-year stint as a director of the Ontario Hockey Association, the Cobourg Cougars are pleased to announce that they have named Perry Bowles (photo credit - Craig Campbell/HHOF) as their new director of hockey operations, a position that was vacant in the 2011-2012 campaign. Bowles is a former general manager of both the Cougars, as well as the Bowmanville Eagles, who merged with the Cougars in 2010.

"Perry will work closely with the Cougars' management group in its continuing efforts to become a leader in Canadian junior hockey," said Cougars' co-owner Scott Mackie. "(Perry) is a very seasoned and well-respected member of the junior hockey community, and we believe he is someone who will do great things for the Cougars going-forward."

Some of Perry’s accomplishments include his role as general manager in helping to guide the Bowmanville Eagles Junior 'A' team to the OJHL (then known as the OPJHL) Eastern Conference Championship in both 2004 and 2006, being selected in 2005 to take an Eastern Canada Junior 'A' Prospects team to the CJHL Prospects Game in Vernon B.C., and he played an instrumental role in helping many players move on to higher levels of hockey, including James Neal of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins.

“I am extremely excited to be back with the Cougars' organization and I expect to make a positive and impactful contribution. It is a tremendous feeling to be coming back home to the Cobourg Cougars organization," said Bowles. "(The Cougars) are a team with incredibly strong support from its community, sponsors and fans and it’s extremely nice to be coming home after a brief hiatus with the OHA and in league administration."

In addition to continuing with the Cougars’ strategic decision to foster closer relations with its Junior 'C' neighbours to the west, namely the Clarington Eagles and the Port Hope Panthers, Bowles’ first job will be to help appoint the Cougars’ next coaching staff, at a time when it readies for its first try-out, slated for May 5-6 at the Cobourg Community Centre.

"Perry understands what it takes to be successful and he will be instrumental in assisting the club going-forward, with an emphasis on helping it to recruit and develop players interested in progressing to higher levels within hockey," Mackie said

Cobourg Cougars and YMCA excited to announce community partnership

The Cobourg YMCA and the Cobourg Cougars are proud to announce a new partnership that will allow the Cougars players to access the YMCA as part of a combined community initiative.

THE COBOURG YMCA IS NOW THE OFFICIAL TRAINING FACILITY FOR THE COBOURG COUGARS.

We felt that with our staff expertise, excellent state of the art equipment and family oriented atmosphere that it was a perfect fit and we hope the Cobourg Cougars players will find a welcoming place where they belong,” says Jason Jackson, Marketing Coordinator at YMCA Northumberland.

“Player memberships are a huge asset to our entire hockey team! It is so important for our players to have a place where they can train and stay in top physical condition throughout the season. This gives us a competitive edge on the ice, and more importantly, the values based environment of the YMCA provides our boys with an edge in life outside of hockey,” adds Kelly Martin, Marketing Director of the Cougars.

As part of the partnership, the YMCA looks forward to having the Cougars’ players and mascot on hand for promotional events and fundraising initiatives. “The more we talked, the more it became apparent that our missions and charitable views are actually quite similar. We want everyone to belong to the Y, even if you are unable to pay the full fee. The Cougars are the same; they want everyone in our community to be a fan and to attend games, regardless of economic status. We are two organizations deeply rooted in the community with a passion for providing access to sport and recreation opportunities for all,” explains Mr. Jackson.

The Cougars will make their first appearance at the YMCA’s 30/140 Street Party on September 17th in celebration of the Y’s 30 years on Elgin St. and 140 years in Cobourg. Both organizations are looking forward to strengthening a long and lasting relationship.

*The players and mascot will be at the Cobourg YMCA on Monday, August 29 from 3 to 5pm to shoot a video commercial. It will be a great opportunity for photos. For more info please contact Jason Jackson at 905-372-4318 x311 or jjackson@ymcanorthumberland.com
